 Trip Inspiration

Never imagined that there is a privately managed waterfall near Pune and Lonavala. I also heard a lot about the scenic beauty next to Kanhe phata during monsoon (on old Mumbai Pune highway) so this stretch was already on the wish list.

In addition, I was looking for a place which is family friendly. Because most of the waterfalls around Pune during peak monsoon are abused by the enormous crowd and becomes pain to managed with younger kids.

Now I was fascinated when one of my friend referred to me Jagtap waterfall which is privately managed, family friendly and with some controls by folks who own it. Interesting isn't it? And they charged 200 INR per person as entry fees, for kids it is 150 INR when we visited.

Follow the details ahead to decide if its worthy visiting this monsoon with family and friends :-)

 Best Time To Visit

Highly recommended during peak monsoon and specially when its raining heavily. Highly recommended during weekdays to avoid rush. If you have missed it this rainy season then surely plan for next year with family.

 Places visited

We started journey very impromptu, at 3pm from Pune for two main reasons -

1) Heavy rains on that day

2) I took off from office so perfect time to hit such location during off peak time during weekday.

The distance from Pune to Jagtap waterfall is 55 kms. It took around 2 hours to reach through Talegaon Toll gate (old Mumbai Pune highway). From Kanhe phata it is roughly 13 kms to reach Jagtap Waterfall. This is the same stretch which leads to Khandi and Thokarwadi Dam.

Very improtant: If you are driving from Pune then take right from Kanhe Phata only. It is a big cross road. DO NOT take right turn before Kanhe Phata. Many times Google Maps leads to unpopular and rough road if you take right earlier.

If you took right, within two kms (while going from Pune to Jagtwap Waterfall), you must be able to see a railway station on the left while crossing the railway track. If you saw it, then you are correct road. If you cannot see railway station while crossing then you are on wrong road. Follow this special tip and thank me later :-)

The whole stretch is full of lush green landscapes. It was very blissful and serene that we were stopping every few kms to take pictures and to feel the tranquility.

Pro family tip: While heading to waterfall, lookout for Indrayani Pure Veg just before the Talegaon Toll gate or Kamat restaurant to make use for snacking and for clean washrooms because after taking right from Kanhe phata the availability of clean washrooms is rare. There were no restaurants or food joint near Jagtap waterfall when we visited.

(Recently we saw an eatery opened by Jagtap Waterfall owners, inside the premises, and there was a restaurant 1 km before Jagtap Waterfall.

No lesser than the clicks of Europe in spring season.

Can you count the number of waterfalls?

We reached Jagtap Waterfall spot by 5pm. Without any doubt, this is one of the best waterfalls I have been with family having younger kids. The clicks will talk more than words.

They have made the facility little better than it was two years back. But still don't expect great hygine perspective when it comes to washrooms.

Nowadays, they got eatery inside serving some quick snacks like wadapav, bhajji, chai etc on extra charges.

Personal recommendation: go with only entry ticket option. After going inside, pay for the food options if it matches with your food choices. If food options are matching your choice then only go for day package.

If you are trekking enthusiast, then come early and drive ahead of Jagtap waterfall to see 5 - 10 other waterfalls (not like privately managed). Other prominent waterfall is Lalwadi waterfall near Thokarwadi dam.

The locals might charge you amount (upto 50 rupees) on name of parking. Many trekkers climb up the hill and reach the top of the waterfall (although it could be risky in peak monsoon).

We visited here during peak monsoon so after driving 10 kms ahead of Jagtap Waterfall, we saw this lake in click which was literally overflowing already.

We didn't went too ahead towards Thokarwadi Dam, as the sun was setting and we wanted to reach a good food joint on old Mumbai Pune highway before 8pm (to avoid rush) and to reach back home in Pune  by 10pm.

Just after Talegaon toll gate, on left lane, we got our food destination. We had sumptuous dinner here while heading back to Pune. It was very neat restaurant with good food, kids play area, clean wash rooms, and nice parking space too.

 Pro-tips

Pro tips to plan this trip well:

1 .The whole trip was done during peak monsoon season when it was raining for a week continuously.

When first time I went on my friend's recommendation, it was not raining for almost 5 days and so the waterfall flow was very narrow. But I understood that how beautiful it will look peak rain, so we did a 2nd trip when it was raining continuously for 4-5 days. From clicks shared in this blog, anybody can make out how lucky we were.

2. The distance of Kanhe waterfall or Jagtap waterfall from Pune is 55 kms and it takes 1.5 hours to reach ideally. If possible, select working day, obvious reason is to avoid huge rush during weekends and also for the clicks with lesser crowd in the background.

3. Make use of washrooms on choice of your restaurants on old Mumbai Pune highway - or head to Indrayani Veg (just before Talegaon Toll naka) or Kamath restaurant (5kms ahead of Talegaon Toll naka) - not a promotion but important tip if you are travelling with family.

4. The entry fees is 150 - 200 rupees at Jagtap waterfall. But do not expect much about facility in sense of changing room or washrooms (they have the makeshift ones). Btw, the setup they made around waterfall to create Bushi dam like feel is superb.

5. The picturesque landscapes you get on kanhe phata to Thokarwadi dam | Laalwadi waterfall | Khandi waterfalls are just fabulous. In-fact the whole stretch of Kanhe phata to Jagtap Waterfall - Mau Village | Mau to Khandi | and an encircle of Thokarwadi dam is worth a scenic drive, with some of the popular waterfalls near Pune. If you want to cover everything then make sure to start in morning.

6. Many people do a circuit of Thokarwadi Dam backwaters. If you want to explore more then make sure to start during morning time. You might be able to combine couple of places around Lonavala, if planned well
